Inspired by traditional Korean architecture, this house outside Seoul straddles the line between contemporary and traditional. Sourcing authentic materials and craftsmen trained in traditional building methods proved challenging—particularly within the project’s budget. Working closely with a local design/build firm, we reinterpreted clay roof tiles, timber frames, and an elevated stone plinth through a corrugated metal roof, glulam rafters, and a floating concrete slab.
Designed for my father-in-law, the project carried personal significance. The result is a home that feels familiar while positioned to host future generations to come.
